Statement on Emergency Order to Drain Red Hill’s Underground Tanks

Lieutenant Governor Josh Green released the following statement:

I support the Deputy Attorney General’s proposed order that the Navy must drain its underground tanks at Red Hill and address safety deficiencies at the facility before seeking state permission to resume operations.

In its aging state, the facility poses an ongoing risk to the aquifer that serves as a critical source of drinking water for Oahu’s residents.

According to an assessment conducted by a Navy consultant, there is approximately an 80% chance of another fuel release of between 1,000 – 30,000 gallons within the next five years.

While I recognize the importance of the facility to the U.S. Navy, the risk of further leaks and spills is simply too great. We must prioritize the health and well-being of our residents and our environment.

The tanks at Red Hill must be drained and the fuel moved above ground and stored securely.

I have called for the US Navy to work with private partners, if necessary, to begin the process of moving the stored fuel, and to develop a plan to ensure the health and safety of the community going forward.
